“I have to say, I didn’t know this was in the world until I saw this article,” said one salon employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation.
“This is an industry that really needs to be regulated and I think the way they’ve gone about it is just outrageous.
It is not a fair environment.”
According to The Associated Press, salon owners in New York state have filed a class action lawsuit against the state of New York and its Food and Drug Administration, claiming that the agency has failed to regulate the industry.
In response, FDA Commissioner David Kessler said that “no FDA regulation is necessary” in the industry, which he called “a huge opportunity” for the state.
The suit has been set to go to trial later this year.
The FDA has already received more than a half million complaints of hair loss since it launched its program in 2012, according to the AP.
